Crabsallover to take statins?

British Heart Foundation: Heart Information Line: 08450 70 80 70 (available Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, a free service for those seeking information on heart health issues) Source: Benecol (use of statins pdf).

I spoke to consultant who said that current UK guidelines are to take statins if there is a 20% risk of Coronary Heart Disease in the next 10 years. This level may be reduced to 10% in future, she said. But over the counter statins may be at too low a dose to make any difference, she said.

I have a 15% risk of CHD in next 10 years. Therefore, although my GP cannot recommend me to take statins, I will nevertheless start taking statins after I get my cholesterol and blood levels checked again.
